On Sunday, October 15 presidential elections were held; 13 candidates were on the ballot. No one candidate received the 50% needed (or 40% + 10%lead over the next candidate) to be elected, so a secondary election will be held November 26. Alvaro Noboa, banana tycoon and Ecuador's wealthiest man, and Rafael Correa, a former finance minister are vying for position. Both are running intense campaigns and are making many promises to secure every possible vote.
Rafael Correa graduated from the University of Illinois and is an ally of Venezuela President Hugo Chávez. Correa wants to cut trade ties with the U.S. and wants to drastically "reform" the ecomony and the government. He leans towards socialism and has great appreciation for the ideology of Fidel Castro in Cuba.
Alvaro Noboa is a conservative who has advanced to the secondary elections for president twice and lost both times. He desires to encourage trade with other countries, reduce governmental corruption and improve housing.
Please join us as we pray for Ecuador in this upcoming election. Above all we desire to see God's will done.
