Independence Day

Parades . . . Fireworks . . . Bullfights . . . "County Fair". . . All of these events transpired this past week as Riobamba celebrated its Independence Day. General Antonio José de Sucre led his troops and successfully defeated the Spanish army on April 21, 1822 at the Battle of Tapi, freeing the Riobambenians from Spanish rule.

We enjoyed watching the parade of marching school bands. Nearly 70 different schools participated and each school has its own marching band!

In the afternoon we enjoyed going to the "county fair" at Quinta Macají (Maw-cuh-HEE). The girls especially enjoyed the dog show, animal exhibits and carnival rides. They also enjoyed trying an ostrich shishkebab -- they said it tasted like beef. YUM!
