In 1736 a team of twelve scientists sponsored by the French Academy of Sciences arrived in Ecuador and delineated the equatorial line. Their row of bust statues can be seen at the monument.
The Equatorial Line Monument (latitude 0 degrees) is located north of Quito and is one of the favorite spots where we like to take first-time visitors to experience straddling both hemispheres at the same time.
