Census

Today is the national census which occurs every ten years. Thousands of high school students around the country are visiting every household and conducting the census. It is quiet, very quiet (except for our girls playing outside). Everything is closed--banks, churches, restaurants, and stores. There is even a law that no liquor is to be sold for 24 hours. We are supposed to stay inside our home until 5 p.m. and the police are patrolling the streets making sure nobody leaves their dwelling places. Our interviewer came and we answered all of the questions of the six page survey and have been officially "counted". The results of the census will be made known to the public in six months.

Did you know that in 2009 nationally . . .
  • 361, 345 babies were born?
  • There were 76,892 marriages & 17,117 divorces?
  • That the recorded population was 14,286,678 (before the census) according to the national census bureau?

We had an exciting day today too. Haha. Really, it was peaceful and easy. Except that we struggled with some of the spanish. I posted about it on servantsinecuador.
