The Art of Tagua Nut Carving

Tagua nuts or "vegetable ivory" come from palm trees that grow in the rainforest. The nuts are harvested from pods and are used for making buttons, necklaces, rings, chess sets, and decorative figurines.

This man has learned the art of tagua nut carving and has been working in his shop for over 20 years. We enjoy visiting him and watching him at work.

A lathe and special tools are used for fine precision carving. It takes 4-6 hours for him to meticulously carve a medium figurine.

Tracy's collection includes a zebra, a penguin, birds, and turtles among others.

The collection continues to grow as we keep a look-out for unique pieces.
