The Price is Right

Several people have written and asked what certain things cost in Ecuador. The country uses the American dollar since 2000, so we do not have the headache of currency exchange. In most of the little stores, a $20 bill is big and they do not have change. Bill goes down to the local gas station to get change. Here, they love to use the $1 gold coin and the Ecuadorian 50 cent piece. One time, Bill went to get change for $20, and they gave him a pocket full of coins! Here are some prices that come to mind:
  • 24 oz. bottled water .30
  • 2 liter of Coca-Cola .70
  • Taxi to any part of the city $1
  • 1 pound of fresh stawberries $1
  • Dozen long-stem roses $2
  • Monthly cell phone plan $21
  • Monthly electric bill $34
  • Average house rent $150-200

A haircut costs $1.50 and a doctor's visit cost is $5 (although both are not guaranteed by professionals!) We like to call these inexpensive prices, "Ecuador Extras".
